Club History
In 1894 a small group of Marengo women formed a literary society to enrich their lives through reading and study. In 1895 they named the society The Marengo Woman’s club.
The MWC joined the Illinois Federation of Women’s Clubs and the 11th District in 1909. In 1974, the MWC became a member of the 4th District.
In 1903, the MWC initiated the first public library; opening it’s doors to the Marengo citizens in 1906. During WWI and WWII, the MWC supported the Red Cross, ran government bond drives and volunteered in hospitals.
Through the years, the MWC has sponsored an annual Arts and Crafts Fair, awarded scholarships to students in School District #154 and donated time and money to the Marengo Fine Arts Co-op. As of 2007, the MWC has added more service projects for the school children of Marengo. (Jo Oakley, Historian)
